Update on Haiti

As many of you know I was blessed to visit Project Hope, an orphanage of over 600 in Haiti last fall. Since the devastating earthquake two weeks ago, the world’s attention has been drawn to this nation and heart’s are breaking as we see the struggle and pain of so many hurting people.
With so much media attention on Haiti it is hard to get our heads wrapped around what is needed there and how to respond. I am so grateful for the offering Schweitzer has taken the past two weeks to send much needed funds to Project Hope to address the immediate needs of food and shelter.
As I read Father Mark’s blog ( found at www.freethekids.org) it is obvious that the earthquake in Port au Prince is changing Project Hope. This weekend 100 more orphans were expected to arrive, swelling the number of children to almost 800. The city of Les Cayes is full of refugees seeking help and healthcare. The prison has been almost completely destroyed and the prisoners abandoned.
What is our response? It is complex and simple. Complex in that the ramifications of this disaster are still unfolding and the many ways we can supply relief are needed. Simple in that God is calling us to pray and he will do the complex.
2Chronicles 7:14 If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, pray, seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.
